Whether you are opening a new office, renovating an existing one, or inheriting a network that just kind of happened, understanding the fundamentals of network infrastructure is essential. This guide covers what you need, why you need it, and how to get it right the first time.
Layer 1: Structured Cabling
Everything starts with cable. It is not glamorous, but it is the foundation everything else depends on.
- Cat6 vs Cat6A: Cat6 supports 10Gbps up to 55 meters; Cat6A supports 10Gbps to the full 100 meters. For new builds, Cat6A is worth the modest premium.
- Fiber: For runs over 100 meters or between buildings, single-mode or multi-mode fiber is required.
- Cable Management: Proper cable trays, patch panels, and labeling are non-negotiable.
- Testing & Certification: Every cable run should be tested and certified with a Fluke or equivalent tester.
Layer 2: Switching
- PoE (Power over Ethernet): Powers wireless APs, IP cameras, and VoIP phones through the network cable
- VLANs: Segment your network so employee, guest, IoT, and camera traffic are isolated
- Stacking/Uplinks: For larger offices, switch stacking simplifies management and adds redundancy
Layer 3: Routing & Security
- Router/Firewall: Your edge device connects to the internet, enforces security, and terminates VPN tunnels
- VPN: Site-to-site VPN connects branch offices to HQ or cloud resources securely
- DNS & DHCP: Provides IP addresses and name resolution for all devices
Layer 4: Wireless
- Site Survey: A professional RF survey identifies optimal AP placement, channel assignment, and power levels
- AP Density: More APs at lower power beats fewer APs at max power — less interference, better roaming
- Controller vs Cloud-Managed: Modern APs are typically cloud-managed (Meraki, Aruba Central, UniFi)
Layer 5: Access Control & Surveillance
- IP Cameras: Run on the network (dedicated VLAN), powered by PoE
- Access Control: Badge readers, electronic locks, door controllers — all network-connected
- Integration: Modern systems tie cameras, access control, and alarms into a unified platform
